Lithium Polymer (LiPo) Battery FAQ

Lithium polymer is the preferred energy source of radio controlled electric models. They are relatively inexpensive, light and have great energy. However, many fans may have some new information about its operations.
Three FAQs about them.
1. What is Cell Balancing?
The lithium polymer batteries are usually packaged in containers of more than two individual battery cells. For example, electric RC helicopters use 3 packets of the cell. Each of these battery cells has a nominal voltage of 3.7 V, which means that each cell can operate when it maintains its charge between 3.0 to 4.2 V. To go above or below or below this range can damage cells and makes it useless or worse, became dangerously unstable and explode.
When the battery is in use, the benefit of each cell can not be beaten. Therefore, the final each flight, the battery cells will be out of balance. A balance charger will not charge the battery once the voltage of the outer package is full, without paying attention to each cell. This causes the battery to become increasingly unbalanced with each charge and would also lead to a poorer performance battery.
Balance charger eliminates any unbalanced-cells symptoms of a battery charging each cell individually to ensure they are maintained balanced the cell voltage at the end of each count. In essence, balance charger lengthen the life of the spare battery and maximizes its performance and keep the package stable and safe to use.
2. What is the grade of C?
Many radio-control fliers quickly grasp the meaning of most Battery associated acronyms but one: the symbol C. In fact, many experts have come up against them trying to explain. However, I heard an understandable explanation of it from a Chinese manufacturer of batteries old or an expert in no time. Is: "Note C" is the number that you multiply the battery capacity to get your download speed.
Confused yet? Basically, a 1000 mAh battery rated 1C will power 1000 mA for 1 hour. Moreover, if the same pack was rated at 2C, it would provide 2000 mA of power for 30 minutes.
3. How long cargo pack?
Each block of lithium-polymer have a different rate to the maximum load. It is very important not to charge a higher rate than the rate specified! Most batteries have a label that specifies this vital information. However, if the maximum charge rate is not specified, keep in mind that most Lipos are made to be billed at a rate of 1C. That means a 1000 mAh pack can be charged at 1A and a 500mAh pack can be charged to 0.5. Once again, never, never exceeding the maximum load for fear that the rate of the battery explodes!
